On a stunning outcrop stretching above the clouds, the Thetford Tree House was carefully positioned to enjoy the amazing views of Mazowe dam in the distance, beyond the valley stretching directly in front. Pantic Architects sited the villa with direct views of the natural surroundings from all rooms while guarding their privacy.
The boulders on the terrain were integrated into the architectural design to create a seamless transition between nature and the built environment, creating a stark contrast between the rough natural elements and soft internal furniture. Parts of the house have the rocks as outer walls, emphasized by direct contact with glass panels and views outward. Nature thrives inside as outside and influences the homely atmosphere inside.
With the steep drop, canopies from trees stretch into the walkways of the veranda. The architects entwined the pathways and a balcony in the middle of the canopies and created a magical feeling of being within the treetops and branches.
The temperate climate of Zimbabwe allows an almost continuous stay outside and external dining and living areas were created on covered verandas that provide protection from the sun and rain.
The flow within the house is carefully choreographed separating public day areas from the intimate bedroom wing. The kitchen and service areas seem hidden while closely tied to the living areas and having separate exits and passages. The colours and mood of the house pivot around cool earthy colours highlighting the trees and plants within the living spaces.
The contemporary Zimbabwean architectural style was refined through the meticulous use of stone, wood and local materials to create a sustainable design lovingly integrated and interacting with nature and its surroundings.
