Air conditioner installation cost in Ottawa runs from about $3,000 to $9,000 in 2026. Most homeowners with a furnace and working ducts pay $4,000 to $9000 for a central system. Ductless mini-splits, heat pumps, and homes that need ductwork or an electrical upgrade sit at different points on that scale.

Your real price depends on your ducts, panel, layout, and only a home visit can confirm it. We’re RB Heating ClimateCare, a Kemptville company that has installed central air, ductless heat pumps and furnaces in our neighbours’ homes since 1992. Below, we share what Ottawa-area homeowners pay by system type, tonnage, and home size, plus extra charges to watch for and the cost to run an AC.

How Much Does AC Cost in Ottawa? Average Installation Price

Air conditioning installation in Ottawa costs $3,000 to $9,000 in 2026. Central air in a home with a furnace and ducts costs $4,000 to $9,000, covering the unit, indoor coil, line set, wiring, and labour.

The price for new AC depends on system type, tonnage, SEER2 rating, and ductwork. Single-zone ductless units cost $3,000 to $6,000, heat pumps run $6,000 to $15,000, and adding ducts can double the total.

Cost of AC Unit Installed by System Type

Central air is the most common choice in Ottawa because most local homes already have a gas furnace and ducts. Here is how the main options compare on installed price.

System TypeInstalled Cost (Ottawa)Best Suited For
Central air conditioner$4,000 to $9,000Homes with a furnace and working ductwork
Ductless mini-split (single zone)$3,000 to $6,000One room, an addition, or a finished basement
Ductless mini-split (multi-zone)$5,500 to $15,000Whole homes with radiators or baseboard heat and no ducts
Air-source heat pump (ducted)$6,000 to $15,000Year-round heating and cooling, and homes chasing rebates

Central Air Conditioner Cost

A central air conditioner uses an outdoor condenser and an indoor coil that sits on top of your furnace. The furnace blower pushes cooled air through the same ducts that carry heat in winter.

The cost of installing central air in Ottawa is $4,000 to $9,000 for most homes with ductwork, and the average central air conditioner cost sits near $5,500. Size drives most of the spread. A 2-ton AC install cost is about $4,000 to $6,000, a 2.5-ton AC unit installed price is $4,500 to $6,800, and a 3-ton AC unit installed price runs $5,000 to $7,800. A 4-ton AC unit price installed is $6,500 to $9,000.

Ductless Mini-Split Cost

A mini-split has an outdoor unit and one or more wall-mounted heads, joined by a small line set through a 3-inch hole in the wall. No ducts are needed, which suits additions, finished basements, and older Ottawa homes with radiators.

A single-zone system costs $3,000 to $6,000 installed in Ottawa. A two-zone setup runs about $5,500 to $8,500, and a multi-zone system with three to five heads costs $8,000 to $15,000. Each extra head adds equipment, line set, and labour. We install ductless heat pumps for homes without ducts. We recommend a site visit first, since some layouts are better served by central air or a ducted heat pump.

Air-Source Heat Pump Cost

An air-source heat pump cools like a central AC in summer and runs in reverse to heat in winter. Cold-climate models keep heating well below -20°C, and many Ottawa homes keep the gas furnace as backup for the coldest nights.

Installed cost is $6,000 to $15,000, depending on capacity, cold-climate rating, and whether ducts are in place. Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program pays $500 per ton, up to $2,000, in gas-heated homes and $1,250 per ton, up to $7,500, in homes heated by electricity, oil, propane, or wood. A cooling-only central AC does not qualify. These amounts were current in October 2026 and depend on program funding, so check our Rebates page for what applies to your home before you buy.

Central Air Conditioner Prices by Brand and Model

The brand you pick can move the price by about $3,000 on the same size of job. The figures below are Ontario supply-and-install pricing, before tax.

Central AC Installation Costs by Brand

BrandModelAverage Price (2-Ton)Ontario Price Range
CarrierComfort 14 (24SCA4)$4,500$3,500 to $5,800
LennoxMerit ML13KC1$4,800$4,200 to $6,200
TraneXR13$5,500$4,500 to $6,560
TraneXL16i$7,450$6,900 to $8,500

These prices assume a 2-ton unit in a 1,500 sq ft home. Some model names on retail price lists predate the SEER2 rating change, so ask your installer for the current version of any unit you are quoted. Local ClimateCare dealers such as RB Heating install ClimateCare’s own single-stage and two-stage central air conditioners, priced through an in-home quote.

Ductless AC Installation Costs by Brand (12K BTU)

BrandModelAverage Price (12K BTU)Ontario Price Range
LennoxMWHD$3,900$3,300 to $5,000
Trane4MXW25$4,400$4,000 to $6,500
CarrierComfort (40MHHQ12 / 38MHRCQ12)$5,000$4,400 to $6,500
Trane4MXW38$6,500$5,500 to $7,500
Trane4MXW85Multi-head systems onlyPriced by quote

These prices cover one indoor head and one outdoor unit. A 12,000 BTU head, which equals one ton, cools a large room or an open main floor.

Total AC Installation Cost by Home Size

Your air conditioner installation cost rises with square footage because bigger homes need more cooling capacity. The typical 1,200 sq ft home AC cost in Ottawa is $4,000 to $6,500 with a 2-ton unit.

Home SizeTypical AC SizeInstalled Cost (Ottawa)
Up to 1,000 sq ft1.5 to 2 ton$3,500 to $5,800
1,000 to 1,500 sq ft2 to 2.5 ton$4,000 to $6,800
1,500 to 2,000 sq ft2.5 to 3 ton$4,500 to $7,800
2,000 to 2,500 sq ft3 to 3.5 ton$5,500 to $9,000
2,500 sq ft and up4 ton or more$7,000 to $12,000+

Note: Square footage is just a starting point. Two homes that are the same size may need different amounts of insulation, different window sizes, different ceiling heights, and face different directions, so they will need different numbers of units. A professional installer will make a heat gain calculation, like the CSA F280 method used in Canada, not go off the square footage.

What Affects Your AC Installation Cost

Ten things move the number on your quote. Some you choose, like brand and efficiency. Others, like ductwork and panel capacity, come with the house.

Type of AC Unit

Central air conditioner with standard gas furnace costs $6,500 to $12,500 with installation. If you upgrade to two-stage or variable-stage system adds $1500 to $3000. But it increases comfort and efficiency.

Size of AC Unit and Load Calculation

Home central air units range from 1.5 to 5 tons, and each half-ton difference adds several hundred dollars to the price. Proper sizing should be done that takes into account windows, insulation, and layout, not a square-foot guess.

Efficiency Rating

New units are rated in SEER2. Entry-level units are around 13.4 SEER2, mid-range units are 15-16, and top-of-the-line variable-speed units are 18 and up. Upgrading from about 14 SEER to 18 SEER will cost you approximately $800 to $1,500, but you’ll save on your hydro bill every summer.

Brand Name

Value brands like RunTru cost less than premium brands like Trane, Carrier, or Lennox for the same tonnage. On a 2-ton job, the difference can be as much as $3,000. Warranty and parts availability in your area are also important considerations.

Labour Cost of Installation

Labour constitutes 50% to 70% of the entire cost. A licensed HVAC technician charges about $75 to $150 per hour in Ottawa. The straight-line replacement takes a day, while the tight side yards, long line sets, or wall-mounted condensers may add hours to the installation time.

Ductwork Condition and Compatibility

Sealing and minor resizing cost $500 to $3,000. If the ducts leak badly or are far too small, full replacement can reach $5,000 to $12,000.

Permits and Inspections

A City of Ottawa building permit is often needed for a first-time install or new ductwork, with fees of $100 to $500. Permits are also usually required for gas, electrical, or refrigerant work.

System Upgrades

A programmable thermostat can cost $150 to $400 and save enough money to pre-cool the house before on-peak hours. A zoning system requiring motorized dampers and a second thermostat costs about $2,000 to $4,000 and would be effective for two-story houses where the upper floors were overheated.

Warranty

ClimateCare air conditioners come with a 10-year parts warranty and a 10-year compressor warranty, plus our 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you’re not happy within one year of installation, we’ll replace it with equal-value equipment or credit you.

Your Location

AC quotes will differ depending on the province and city in which you are located. Rural homes near Ottawa may have a travel fee, while those downtown with limited access may incur longer installation time. Double-check availability before making any assumptions based on a particular quote.

What’s Included When You Buy an AC With Installation?

Installation costs in Ontario vary based on ductwork modification, accessibility, and complex setup. Here is what a normal installation includes, from taking out the old unit to the final test.

  1. Removal of the old condenser and indoor coil, with the refrigerant recovered as Ontario rules require.
  2. Setting the new outdoor unit on a level pad or wall brackets and fitting a matched coil on top of your furnace.
  3. Connecting the refrigerant lines and electrical disconnect, then pulling a vacuum and charging the system.
  4. Start-up and testing of pressures, airflow, and the thermostat, plus registering the manufacturer warranty in your name.

Additional Costs That Can Affect Your Total

Homes with limited electrical capacity need electrical assessment before installation. These extras can turn a $5,000 quote into a $7,000 one, so confirm with your HVAC contractor whether electrical capacity is included.

Additional CostTypical RangeWhen You’ll Encounter It
Additional CostTypical RangeWhen You’ll Encounter It
Electrical panel upgrade$1,500 to $4,000The panel has no room or capacity for a new 240-volt AC circuit
Ductwork repair or modification$500 to $5,000Ducts are leaky, undersized or laid out poorly for cooling
Building permit$100 to $500First-time installs or new ductwork, depending on City of Ottawa rules
Refrigerant line replacement$300 to $1,500Old lines are damaged, the wrong size, or left over from an R-22 system
Smart thermostat$150 to $400Optional, though some variable-speed systems need a matching control
Old unit disposal$50 to $300Removal and refrigerant recovery are not already in the quote

Cost to Install Central AC in a Home With No Ductwork

The cost of putting in central air in a house with no ducts depends far more on the ductwork than on the AC itself. Many older Ottawa homes heat with radiators or baseboards, so new ducts often become the largest line in the central air renovation cost.

What Ductwork Installation Involves

Installers create supply and return runs, cut in vents, and run ducts through basements, closets, and attics. If the house is already finished, it means openings in the walls or ceilings and then filling the holes.

Ductwork Cost Breakdown

ScenarioTypical CostWhat Drives the Price
New build or unfinished basement$2,000 to $5,000Open framing makes routing quick
Partial retrofit (finished home)$5,000 to $9,000Some access through the basement, attic, or bulkheads
Full retrofit (finished home)$9,000 to $12,000+Walls and ceilings opened, then drywall and paint restored

Most of that money pays for labour and repairs to finished surfaces, not the metal ducts.

New HVAC System Cost With Ductwork

Installation of a new ducted HVAC system requires mechanical installation and building modification. Here is the total HVAC installation cost with new ducts, plus the usual ductless alternative. It varies based on home layout, accessibility, and level of finishing required.

ScenarioTotal Cost
Central AC + ductwork (existing furnace)$6,000 to $11,000
Furnace + AC + full new ductwork$14,000 to $22,000
Heat pump + full new ductwork$15,000 to $25,000
Multi-zone ductless instead (no new ducts)$8,000 to $15,000

How Much Does It Cost to Run an AC in Ottawa?

Running central air in Ottawa costs most local homes $140 to $370 a season, or $35 to $95 a month from June to September. Ontario’s summer on-peak rate of 20.3 cents per kWh applies 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, which lines up with when your AC works hardest.

Home SizeAC SizeOld 10 SEER Unit (Season)14 SEER Unit (Season)18 SEER Unit (Season)14 SEER Unit (Monthly)
Up to 1,000 sq ft1.5 ton$195$140$110$35
1,000 to 1,500 sq ft2 ton$260$185$145$45
1,500 to 2,000 sq ft2.5 ton$325$230$180$60
2,000 to 2,500 sq ft3 ton$390$280$215$70
2,500 sq ft and up4 ton$520$370$290$95

These are estimates. They assume about 600 hours of full-load run time from June to September and an all-in cost of about 18 cents per kWh, including delivery. The Ontario Energy Board resets prices every November 1, so check your Hydro Ottawa bill for your own rate.

HVAC Replacement Cost vs New AC Installation

What a Replacement Typically Includes

AC replacement is cheaper than a new installation because the ductwork, pad, wiring, and thermostat are already in place. The team removes your old condenser and coil, recovers the refrigerant, installs the new equipment, connects the lines and power, and tests the airflow. They also remove your old equipment for around $50 to $300.

When Replacement Costs More Than a Direct Swap-Out

A swap stays simple only when the new unit fits the old setup. Costs climb when:

  • The new unit is a different size, and the ducts need changes, adding $500 to $3,000.
  • The electrical panel cannot carry the new load, adding $1,500 to $4,000 for an upgrade.
  • The refrigerant lines are damaged, the wrong size, or left over from an old R-22 system, adding $500 to $1,500.

AC Repair Cost vs Replacement: Which Is Cheaper?

  • Repair makes sense when the unit is under 10 years old and the fix, like a capacitor or fan motor, costs under half of replacement.
  • Replacement wins once the AC is 12 to 15 years old, needs a compressor, or the repair tops half the price of a new unit.

If your unit still has life in it, our AC repair team diagnoses the problem and tells you what the fix will cost before any work starts. A WeCare maintenance plan adds a yearly tune-up, priority appointments and 15% off repairs.

When Is the Best Time to Buy a New AC?

Timing affects how quickly you get booked and, sometimes, what you pay.

  • Spring (April to early June): crews still have open dates, and your new AC is running before the first heat wave.
  • Fall (September to November): demand drops after summer, and some contractors offer end-of-season pricing on stock they have on hand.
  • Peak summer (July and August): installers are busy with breakdowns, wait times grow, and there is little room to negotiate.

If your old unit is limping along, booking a fall install lets you plan the job instead of replacing it in an emergency next July.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does AC installation take?

A straight central AC replacement takes a day (4-8 hours). The first install with a new electrical circuit may take the whole day or more.

Can an HVAC professional help choose the right system size?

Yes. A licensed installer measures rooms, windows, and insulation and runs a heat-gain calculation, usually to the CSA F280 standard used in Canada. That gives you the right tonnage.

Does installation include a thermostat replacement?

It often doesn’t. Many central AC quotes use your current thermostat if it’s compatible with the new unit. A new or smart thermostat typically costs less than doing it separately later.

What warranty comes with a new AC system?

Most brands give 10 years on parts and the compressor once you register the unit, usually within 60 to 90 days of installation.

Can I install an air conditioner myself?

You can install window or portable unit, but for central or ductless system, you need a licensed electrical contractor and an ESA notification.
