4 Need-to-Know Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks

April is right around the corner, and you know what that means!

It’s spring cleaning season.

It’s a tale as old as time—the 1800s, to be exact. With the winter months came a slew of dirt, grime, and soot. So, every April, the household got the deep clean it really needed—windows washed and opened to air out the soot; floors scrubbed; hallways swept; kitchens dusted; lamps filled.

Okay, so you probably don’t have to fill your oil lamp, but you do have a mission ahead of you. Make the job easier by reading our spring cleaning tips, sure to get the occasion over with in the most efficient way possible!

1. Vinegar Is Your Friend

Vinegar is a fantastic, natural cleaning solution that many homeowners overlook as they reach for harmful bleach sprays.

Use vinegar in a 1:1 ratio with water and go at the hard spots—your showerhead, the kitchen sink, greasy stovetops. The best part is that vinegar is food-safe so that you can spray your whole kitchen without worry.

If the smell of vinegar isn’t your favorite, add a few drops of essential oil or some citrus peels to your mixture! Keep the solution stored in a spray bottle.

2. So Is Organization

As you deep clean your house, don’t forget to organize and de-clutter as you go.

First, clearing some space makes cleaning that much easier. You can reach all the nooks and crannies without any annoying mess in your way.

But, it also helps it to stay clean. If you’re struggling to stay organized, consider using like containers (easy to store and label) rather than store-bought packaging; throw away old papers and magazines crowding your counters; keep necessities in reach while putting nonessentials out of eyesight.

Bonus: an organized space helps reduce stress!

3. Don’t Neglect the Fridge

Sure, you wiped down the outside of your fridge doors . . . but when was the last time you cleaned the inside?

Take out the bins and clean them in the sink with soap and water. This process helps them sparkle and also reduces bacteria build-up. While the storage bins are out, wipe down every shelf.

As you clean the fridge, throw out anything expired—including your take-out from three days ago—and see if you can repackage things to save space. (You did buy those containers we mentioned, right?) Use a piece of masking tape and a permanent marker to make quick, homemade labels that say the date of opening or cooking.

4. Get Those Forgotten Spaces

The point of spring cleaning is to do a deep dive into all the places in your home you forget about cleaning.

That includes:

  • Vacuuming vents
  • Wiping the top of the fridge, tops of fan blades
  • Cleaning the shower drains
  • Refreshing your bedding
  • Clean your cleaners! That includes vacuums, brooms, mops, etc.
