A Guide To Creating A Study Space In Your Home

Schools all over the world have moved online as a way to keep kids learning in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to UNICEF, because of the health crisis, 91 percent of students are unable to go to school due to the temporary closure of learning institutions all around the world. As a result, parents have begun to step up their knowledge of online learning platforms, and they’ve also started to prepare their homes to make them suitable for remote learning. Studies have shown that having a dedicated space for studying at home can boost learning and increase productivity in children. If you have yet to create a learning environment in your abode, consider these tips to make a beautiful, comfortable and functional study space for your children.

Do a minimal remodel to create a homeschooling space

If you don’t have a spare room which you can turn into a study space, consider doing a minimal remodel to create an area that’s suitable for learning. For instance, you can put up dividers to create a study room somewhere in your living room, and this works especially well if you have an open floor plan with lots of space to work with. However, you may also want to consult home remodeling contractors to know about your other options. They could inspect your home to find potential areas that they can remodel to make a study space, such as the attic or the basement. An attic can be converted into a study room by improving its ventilation, and its proximity to the roof means that you can ask the contractor to put a skylight in there for natural lighting. Meanwhile, a basement can also be turned into a study space by reducing its humidity levels to prevent mold growth, improving airflow, and by adding strategic lighting to make it conducive to remote learning.

Create a study room in the backyard

If your child is easily distracted or if you don’t want them to be disturbed while they’re learning remotely, consider creating a study room in the backyard. If you don’t have the skills to create a shed, don’t fret – you can buy a prefabricated shed kit in a modern design, and all you have to do is to make arrangements with the seller so that they can set it up for you upon delivery. Once the shed is set up, make sure that all the lights and electric outlets work, then furnish the area with a table, a comfortable chair, a rug and a bookshelf. Add some decor to liven up the place, then stay inside the study room for about 30 minutes to see what else it needs, such as a fan for added ventilation or a portable air conditioner.

Make sure that it’s well equipped

A study room should have everything that a student needs for them to be able to do homework and participate in online classes. Make sure that it has a strong internet connection, a computer with a good headset and camera, and a printer. Keep school supplies such as pens, scissors, staplers, erasers, notebooks, calculators, printer paper, and coloring materials within reach, but keep them neatly corralled in containers or drawers, as too much clutter can be distracting. Remind your child to care for their study space by keeping it clean and turning off all equipment after the end of each online lesson.

Creating a dedicated space for studying in your home can help your child to focus and encourages them to be productive everyday. Try these tips to make a space conducive to learning in your home so you can help your child achieve their academic goals.
