Designed for maximum transparency, the exclusive Villa Kavel luxury residence, in the center of Amsterdam, was conceived as an abstract concrete volume that mainly follows the form of its diamond shaped plot. Due to its profile, the building is experienced differently from every side so that it is sometimes narrow and sharp and sometimes massive and wide. The transparency of the structure defines its interaction with nature and the relationship between inside and outside.
Although Villa Kavel is very minimalistic in shape, the building itself offers a wealth of spatial qualities. With its sharp angles and high elevations, the structures appearance changes as you walk around it. Inside, the atmosphere varies between light and airy to dark and intimate as in a nightclub. The open plan interior was created without any columns thanks to the load-bearing concrete facades and the structural central stair shaft. On the ground floor, all the cabinets, the fireplace, audio system, and television are concealed inside a series of freestanding custom-made furniture units, strategically positioned to create a set of flowing spaces. The contrasting pallet with interior elements finished in dark timber, form a striking contrast with the raw concrete.
Located on the tip of Rieteiland East, the villa sits on a newly constructed island in the North of Holland, close to the centre of Amsterdam with extensive views of the water and the opposite Diemerpark. The villa has dynamic spatial and material qualities: from an unlimited space with panoramic views of nature to private rooms hidden behind a veil of shutters, from sleek custom furniture against a raw concrete structure to warm timber paired with cold steel. The transparency of space along with sweeping views are the key elements of the luxury Villa Kavel design that have resulted in a sleek and unified aesthetic that evokes a sense of calm and serenity.
