Top 7 Most Expensive Things Bought With Bitcoin

Bitcoin is an alternative currency. It was intended as a decentralized currency and something that you can use for your everyday purchases, just like cash. However, a majority of people consider Bitcoin as an investment option right now. There are many who use Bitcoin to purchase things though, and these people have made some of the biggest purchases in history, using Bitcoin.

As per the survey conducted by TheMoneyMongers.com, here are the top seven most expensive things bought with Bitcoin:

1. Pizza

In the history of Bitcoin, the pizza story is the most popular one. A guy named Laszlo Hanyecz, on May 22, 2010, paid 10,000 Bitcoins for two delivered Papa John’s pizzas. Of course, back then, the price of Bitcoin wasn’t as huge as it is today’s time.

Back then, 10,000 Bitcoins was around $41 only. But, if the person kept holding his 10,000 Bitcoins when a single coin was worth over 65,000 USD in in November 2021, the price of the pizza would be $650,000,000 USD.

However, Laszlo Hanyecz doesn’t have any regrets about his purchase. According to his words, the idea of trading Bitcoins for a pizza was incredibly cool.

Also, back then, Papa John was not accepting Bitcoin as a payment method. So, Laszlo went to the Bitcointalk forum to find another user who could help him with the process.

2. Cars

Most Bitcoin or crypto enthusiasts have this common joke of getting a Lamborghini with crypto investments. And there are some people who did use Bitcoin to buy some of the fanciest cars.

Among all the names, the most famous one is the VinWiki CTO Peter Saddington, who purchased a $200,000 2015 Lamborghini Huracan for 45 bitcoins back in 2017. At that time, 45 Bitcoins were worth around $420,000. But he also mentioned that he paid just $115 for the Bitcoins when he bought them in 2011.

Another popular story was from 2013 when someone purchased a Tesla S from Florida for 91 BTC, which was worth $109K at that time. And in this time, it would be worth $3256125.60.

3. Land

The land is always considered as a good investment, and back in 2014, someone thought this too. One unnamed Silicon Valley Entrepreneur used Bitcoin to purchase a beautiful 1.4-acre plot of land in California near Lake Tahoe. At the time of purchase, it was worth about $1.6 million.

However, the identity of the buyer remained mysterious for years. But recently, it was published that a man named Chamath Palihapitiya, who is the boss of Social Capital, made the payment using Bitcoins.

In his words, investing in the land using his Bitcoins was a poor investment. Back then, Bitcoin was worth slightly less than $600. However, at today’s price, he could have bought a lot more land.

Also, according to some reports, the buyer interceded to build a home on the site, which is located in the midst of a luxurious 2,177-acre resort.

4. Condo in Trump SoHo

Back in 2013, a condo in Trump Soho was priced at 25,500 Bitcoins. And it was valued at $2 million when it was sold to an anonymous person.

It was a one-bedroom 741 sq. ft. apartment in Donald Trump’s New York City hotel. The seller of the apartment refused to accept any other kind of payment, except Bitcoin.

In today’s time, those 25,500 Bitcoins would be $914004047.42. This is enough to buy the building twice or buy a few hotels.

5. Toyota Prius

There is someone who didn’t spend his Bitcoins to purchase a Lamborghini, but instead purchased a Toyota Prius.

While the Prius isn’t the fanciest car out there, it holds one of the top spots for the most expensive crypto car.

An investor named Michael Tozoni, spent 1,000 BTC on the second-hand car, back in 2013, when Bitcoin was priced at about $22. After a few months, the same $22 turned into $1000 for the first time. And in today’s time, it would be worth $35843295.98.

Tozoni regretted this decision and said that it was a very good lesson about being careful with your investments.

So, if you are too thinking of spending your BTC to buy something, maybe this is also a good lesson for you.

6. Miami Mansion

Buying properties with Bitcoin is not a new thing, and it is not really surprising that someone in 2018 bought a seven-bedroom house for 455 Bitcoin.

The interesting part is that the house was sold by a Bitcoin trader named Michael Komaransky, who stated in the terms of sale that he would accept $6 million dollars for the property or its equivalent in BTC.

Komarnsky wanted to complete the deal without any involvement of fiat currencies, and the same happened. A like-minded man closed the deal, using Bitcoin only.

Even though there are lots of other stories similar to this one in the world of luxury real estate being bought with Bitcoin as the currency of trade, this one seems to be the most popular one among all.

7. Tickets to Space

Another popular Bitcoin purchase story is the ticket to space. Virgin Galactic has been trying over the years to make flights to space. And some of the popular names like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and Brad Pitt have paid around $250,000 for a ticket to space.

Although Virgin Galactic did make its way to space with Richard Branson aboard a flight in 2021, it is still unclear when they will start being operational for the general public.

In keeping with the topic of Bitcoin, there are two people who made a purchase of 450 BTC each to reserve their seats to space, back in 2014. These tickets were reserved by the Winklevoss twins, who own a lavish luxury home in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California.

If you calculate the worth of those 455 Bitcoins, the worth of it today would be $16308699.67.

Final Words

So those were some of the most expensive things bought with Bitcoin. Apart from these, there are lots of purchases that are made using Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, like Ethereum.

While making payments using Bitcoin hasn’t become a mainstream thing yet, experts believe that everyone will be using Bitcoin, or other cryptos, for their everyday purchases in the future.
