How To Make Your Own CBD Oil from Hemp at Home

Did you know you can make your own CBD oil from hemp in your home? It won’t be as refined as a professionally made example, of course, but it can be a cheap way of enjoying CBD. What do you need? Well, first you’ll need some good quality hemp – it can be bought legally across the USA – and then you’ll need the following items:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Parchment paper
  • Baking tray
  • Grinder
  • Catchment container
  • Double boiler
  • Wooden spoon
  • Funnel
  • Spatula
  • Plastic syringe
  • Fine strainer

Many of these you’ll have, and you also need your oven! Now, before we go on, we need to explain a process called decarboxylation.

What is Decarboxylation?

The raw hemp contains CBDA, the natural form of CBD. To convert CBDA to CBD we need to perform the decarboxylation process. It sounds complicated, but in fact it means heating the hemp – having been ground to small parts – to 225C in your oven for one hour. This converts the CBDA to CBD, which has now become active. You’re nearly ready to look at the extraction process, but before that we’d like show you where to buy a portable dab pen for CBD vape oil so you can enjoy your DIY CBD, and also talk about the carrier that you need to mix your CBD oil with.

Carrier Oil or Alcohol?

The medicinal uses of CBD are many and include such as relief from chronic pain as well as help with sleep problems, plus anxiety and depression. Whatever you are going to use your home-made CBD oil for, you need a carrier to mix it with. This is usually alcohol or a carrier oil.

Which is best? We believe the alcohol method is easiest as pure alcohol is easy to obtain and makes for the most efficient process. Now let’s look at the extraction method using alcohol.

Extracting the CBD

Now you are ready to follow the instructions to create your own home made CBD oil from the hemp flower that you have heated as described in the oven. Here are the steps you need to take:

  • Put the hemp flower in the mixing bowl and completely cover it with alcohol. Stir the mixture for 10 minutes. This will help remove the other cannabinoids and terpenes that are in the plant and leave you with CBD.
  • Now you need to strain the mixture to separate the CBD. Do this by pouring slowly through cheesecloth strainer into a jar or other glass container. At first the mixture will be green, but as you keep straining it will become clearer. Once it stops clearing further with each pass you are ready for the next step.
  • This step should be performed in area that is well-ventilated or outdoors. Set up the double boiler. Pour the alcohol-CBD liquid into the boiler and apply heat – a blowtorch is a good way of heating. The alcohol vaporizes quickly, leaving you with a tar-like substance. This is your CBD oil.
  • Extract the oil using the syringe and put it into a container where it can be kept sealed.

That’s it! You’ve made your own CBD oil extract which you can now vape. We recommend caution with this method as alcohol vapor is quite volatile, which is why we suggest the extraction be performed outdoors.

You can also use marijuana to extract CBD with higher levels of THC should you wish, and with many strains of hemp flower available you can create different CBD oils that you can then try and compare. Be careful and give it a try!
